Trance

Marimba Quartet

Trance was inspired by the feeling one gets while slowly drifting into unconsciousness. The piece is homogenous and minimalistic, using only the color of the marimba, a tonality of C minor with no accidentals, and melodic material derived from a simple five-note scale. Its meditative nature is reminiscent of a white noise, like the sound of a fan or a driving car or radio static, which phases in and out of one’s perception as they drift in and out of sleep.
