An Impulse to Soar
Flute, Clarinet, Percussion, Piano, and String Quartet
The title of this piece is based on a quotation by Helen Keller: "One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar." I started this work in April 2020, soon after the COVID-19 shutdown swept the United States. It was a dark, uncertain time for everyone. While I felt I could have written something dark and tortured in response to the situation, I decided to move in the opposite direction, channeling a sense of hope and optimism for the future.
